Temperance

The Temperance card is the 14th card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. It is typically associated with balance, moderation, patience, and purpose. The card often features an angel, usually with one foot on the ground and the other in water. This represents the balance between the material and spiritual worlds. The angel typically pours liquid from one cup to another, symbolizing the blending of opposites, harmony, and the flow of life. The angel’s robe often has a triangle within a square, signifying the integration of spirit (triangle) with the material world (square). In the background, there is usually a path leading to a bright sun, indicating enlightenment, clarity, and a sense of direction. Iris flowers are sometimes present, symbolizing communication and the Greek goddess Iris, who was the messenger of the gods.

When drawn upright, the Temperance card conveys themes of balance, which encourages moderation and finding a middle ground in situations. It also may advise patience and calmness, suggesting that things will unfold in due time. It will highlight the importance of finding meaning and purpose in actions. Definitely another of my favorite cards!

In reverse, it can mean a signal of imbalance, possibly pointing to excess or extremes. It warns against hasty actions and the need for patience. It may also suggest a tendency towards overindulgence and lack of moderation.

Key Traits: Balance, patience, purpose and adaptation. There are two sides to every issue, weighing the middle ground.

Key Traits (reversed): Imbalance, impulsiveness and imbalance. The need of patience is stressed heavily in a reverse position.
